Anaimalai Hills Travel Guide — Where to Stay, What to Do

The complete guide to the Anaimalai Hills — Valparai, Topslip, tea estates, wildlife, and where to stay.

The Anaimalai Hills — part of the Western Ghats — sit at the junction of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, rising from the plains around Coimbatore and Pollachi into some of the most biologically diverse terrain in South Asia. The range includes two of India's most important protected areas, a landscape of tea and coffee estates at higher elevations, and a set of small hill towns that remain largely off the mainstream tourist circuit.

This guide covers everything you need to plan a visit to the Anaimalai Hills — what to see, where to stay, how to get around, and what kind of trip works best for different travellers.

What Makes the Anaimalai Hills Different

Most Western Ghats destinations have been discovered and, in many cases, over-visited. Munnar is crowded. Ooty is crowded. The Anaimalais aren't — partly because they're split between two states, partly because access to the core areas is regulated, and partly because the infrastructure is minimal by design.

The primary draws here are wildlife, landscape, and the kind of quiet that has almost disappeared from the more famous hill stations. There are no shopping streets, no crowds of selfie-tourists, and no hotels every 200 metres. What there is: dense Shola forest, elephant herds, tea estates, waterfalls, and roads that feel genuinely remote.

Key Areas Within the Anaimalai Hills

Valparai

The most accessible part of the Anaimalais, Valparai is a small hill town about 65 km from Coimbatore. The drive from Pollachi through 40 hairpin bends is one of the best scenic drives in Tamil Nadu — past waterfalls, tea plantations, and areas where lion-tailed macaques have right-of-way on the road.

Valparai is primarily a plantation town. There are no major tourist attractions in the conventional sense — the draw is the landscape, the tea estate walks, and the wildlife. The Chinnakallar waterfalls are nearby, and the Manamboli area has good elephant sighting possibilities in the early mornings.

Who it works for: Couples, small groups, nature lovers. People who want to be somewhere without doing anything in particular.

When to go: October to March. The monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rainfall and occasional road closures on the ghats.

Anamalai Tiger Reserve (Topslip)

The Anamalai Tiger Reserve covers 958 sq km and is one of the most important tiger and elephant habitats in India. The entry point most visitors use is Topslip, about 60 km from Coimbatore.

The Forest Department runs guided jeep safaris, elephant safaris, and trekking programmes inside the reserve. Accommodation inside is available in Forest Department cottages — basic, clean, and remarkably peaceful given where you are. Permits and accommodation must be booked through the Tamil Nadu Forest Department; both fill up fast on weekends and school holiday periods.

What you can see: Asian elephants (common), deer, Indian bison (gaur), leopards, and occasionally tigers. The birdwatching is exceptional.

Who it works for: Wildlife-focused travellers, birders, families with older children. Not suited to those who expect resort-level comfort.

Parambikulam Tiger Reserve (Kerala side)

Across the state border, Parambikulam is often combined with an Anaimalais visit. The Parambikulam reservoir runs through the reserve and the boat safari is one of the more unusual wildlife experiences in South India. Requires booking with Kerala Forest Department.

Where to Stay

Inside the Reserves

Both Anamalai Tiger Reserve and Parambikulam have Forest Department accommodation. It's the right choice if you want to be inside the wildlife zone, but comfort is functional rather than comfortable. Book weeks ahead.

Valparai Plantation Stays

Several tea estate bungalows and homestays in Valparai offer accommodation in the plantation itself — quiet, private, and with good views. These typically need advance booking, especially in peak season.

Farmstay Near Coimbatore / Pollachi (Best for Groups)

If you're visiting the Anaimalais with a group or family, a private farmstay in the Pollachi belt — the flat farmland below the Anaimalais — is often the best base. You get the comfort and privacy of a full property booking, and the Anaimalais are 30–60 minutes away.

Serene Windsor is one such property: a private farmstay on 53 cents of land, 30–40 minutes from Coimbatore city and well-positioned for day trips into Valparai and Topslip. The property has a 50 ft × 20 ft pool, villa accommodation for up to 15 guests, and unlimited farm-to-table meals at ₹50,000/night.

Getting to the Anaimalai Hills

From Coimbatore: The main route to both Valparai and Topslip goes through Pollachi (~40 km from Coimbatore on NH 544). From Pollachi, Valparai is another 65 km via the Aliyar–Monkey Falls ghat road. Topslip is about 30 km from Pollachi through the forest reserve road.

From Chennai or Bangalore: Fly or train to Coimbatore, then drive from there. Both Valparai and Topslip make sense as 1–2 night extensions from Coimbatore.

Car hire: The roads in the Anaimalais are narrow in places and the ghat sections require careful driving. A local driver familiar with the route is a sensible choice if you're not used to mountain roads.

Best Time to Visit

October to February: Best for wildlife and clear skies. Comfortable temperatures. Peak season for tourism.

March to May: Can be hot in the lower elevations. Valparai remains pleasant. Wildlife moves to water sources and is often easier to spot.

June to September (Monsoon): The landscape is strikingly beautiful — waterfalls at full flow, tea estates intensely green. However, ghat roads can be dangerous and some sections close temporarily. Only for experienced travellers who can adapt.

What to Pack

  • Light layers for Valparai (cooler at elevation, especially at night)
  • Good walking shoes
  • Insect repellent
  • Rain gear if visiting between June and September
  • Cash — ATMs are sparse once you leave Pollachi

Planning Your Anaimalai Hills Trip

The Anaimalais work best as a 2–3 night trip centred on Pollachi or Valparai. Use day one to drive up to Valparai (allow a full day for the drive and exploration). Day two for Topslip safaris if booked. Day three for a slower return.

For groups who want comfort alongside the wilderness, basing yourself at a private farmstay near Pollachi and making day trips into the hills is the most practical approach — you don't compromise on sleep and meals while still getting the full Anaimalai experience.
